Nights & Weekends S5: GTFOL

When you're building an MVP, I think it's very important to GTFOL as soon as possible.

I first came across the term GTFOL working with Furqan Rydhan, and the term has even made it into the Urban Dictionary.

All projects start on a developer's machine, and the sooner we can get them off localhost on servers that others can access, the sooner we can start to get feedback and iterate on the idea.

I have now successfully got Playlist Kit off localhost, and onto servers. If you try and access the website, you'll get a 503 error. I'm using Laravel's maintenance mode feature, to restrict access to the website.

Unfortunately, to use the software in public, the Spotify integration will need to be reviewed and approved by the folks at Spotify:

While I still have a bit of work to do on Playlist Kit before it's ready for real public launch, it is good enough to get into the hands of early testers, and rather than waiting until everything is 100% ready, it's better to get that feedback sooner rather than later.

I'm hoping that Spotify can do the review quickly, since it's a simple integration I'm not anticipating any problems, so that I can get the software into soft launch early next week. This is, however, my first time submitting an application to Spotify for review, so I'm not how long they will take.

As soon as I get through the review process, I'll let everyone here know that you can try out the software if you'd like too. I'd love the early feedback!

While I'm putting the final touching to the website, I'm also starting to think about how I'm going to launch Playlist Kit, more on that in the upcoming posts.

Cheers,
Mubs

Mubs A recent tweet by Pieter Levels reminded me of the importance of being a jack of all trades when working on side projects. It's not enough to be able to good build software, there is a lot more to building a good project than the quality of the software, in fact that's probably pretty low on the list. Mubs With over 120 side projects, a question I often get is: "How do ship so much?" Keeping on track with projects can be difficult when after the demands of a day job and personal commitments. I've shared some of the ways I stay on track with my projects in the most recent blog post: How to keep shipping? I'm focusing on SEO as a way to market (and grow) projects this year, and was excited to see that Danny Postma will be publishing a course on SEO soon. I've already learned a lot from...

Mubs This week, I've been thinking about who I'm building for. Yes, I'm building a side project for my own reasons (networking, revenue, whatever) but who is the actual project for? What is the Ideal Customer Profile for your project, and why is it helpful to think about that right when you get started. I dig a little deeper into the concept, and how I worked through the process for a previous project: Defining your ICP Featured Side Project I wanted to take a minute to highlight a side...
